Louise Stomps
1900 Berlin – 1988 Wasserburg am Inn
Stomps was a German sculptor and graphic artist whose artistic work was closely linked to Berlin. In 1928, she began her training with Johannes Röttger at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen and, at the same time, with Milly Steger at the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen. In the late 1920s, she produced her first sculptures in wood and plaster, including figures and portraits. In 1932, she moved into a studio in Berlin together with the sculptor Lidy von Lüttwitz.
During the 1930s, Stomps increasingly worked with stone and developed a distinctive formal language rooted in the human body. As a staunch opponent of National Socialism, she largely withdrew from the public art scene from 1933 onwards. After 1945, she resumed exhibiting her work in Berlin. Her initially figurative work later evolved increasingly towards abstraction, whilst retaining the organic and body-related foundation of her sculptures.
