The exhibition presents a series of Ruprecht von Kaufmann’s (born 1974) impressive painterly works in which animals are the protagonists. In surreally entangled everyday situations, he shows animals as enigmatic carriers of meaning for the multi-layered experiences of the human psyche.
In a large-format work created for the exhibition, the artist makes reference to Renée Sintenis, who, as she herself said, ‘was closer to animals than to people.’ In von Kaufmann’s paintings, animals and humans enter into special and idiosyncratic relationships that offer a variety of points of reference to cultural history.
