Colour as a sculptural theme in the rooms of the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin’s Westend district

In a radical act, eight artists are staging colour in the rooms of the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin’s Westend district, thus abandoning the traditional paths of painting. Angela Dwyer, Simone Lanzenstiel, Christine Rusche, Elisabeth Sonneck, Rainer Splitt, Nicola Stäglich, Esther Stocker and Klaus-Martin Treder work with their colour installations directly in the historic rooms of the former sculptor’s studio from the 1920s, using walls, floors, corners and niches as places of display. The colour itself is condensed into object-like installations in the works on display. In addition to wall paintings, experimental colour objects are exhibited on 350 square metres of exhibition space, which are placed freely in the museum space and form their own space solely out of the materiality of the colour, without a classic paint support such as canvas. The works, most of which were developed for the exhibition and the historical location, are closely related to the light, clear architecture of the museum. However, the works do not confront the viewer as in a classic exhibition situation, but rather allow the viewer, like the museum space, to become part of the actual work of art. New experiences of the physical, emotional and associative potential of colour and seeing are made possible. The exhibition thus continues a central question of painterly discourse into the 21st century.

The exhibition was conceived by the Berlin-based artists Elisabeth Sonneck and Nicola Stäglich, both of whom are also represented in the exhibition with their own works.
